Lazy Captionists

Question for those who rely on closed captions and subtitles to watch movies: Have you ever rented a movie, excited to watch it, only to discover that the subtitles/captions are... well, sucky? I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me, and it happened again last night. I scoped out the local RedBox and saw The Runaways so I decided to check it out. Why not, it's only $1 and I do like the band.

The movie is okay, but the subtitles. Ugh. Half of this movie is singing, and what does the person typing the subtitles do?? They type, "[Singing The Runaways 'Cherry Bomb']" instead of typing out the lyrics for the song as they sing it... WTF WTF WTF. I got this movie because I like the their songs, and wanted to read/listen to the but they didn't even subtitle them! Every single song they sang was subtitled like that. [Singing Joan Jett & the Blackhearts 'Bad Reputation']" and so on. Pisses me off. Whatever happened to equal access for everyone, isn't that why captions and subtitles were invented in the first place? There are deaf people who enjoy music too, you know.

There are only like, two parts when the captionist(s) decide to type out the words, and it's during a like, 3 minute exchange between Joan Jett and a guitar teacher when they just sing one or two lines from songs, and when the band started coming up with 'Cherry Bomb' during practice in a trailer. That's it! There's even a part in the beginning when Cherie Curie is singing one of David Bowie's songs, by herself, during a school talent show, and yeah, it was captioned like that. [Singing David Bowie] Seriously people. Don't be lazy when you're captioning movies, isn't that what you're paid to do?!

Don't get this movie if you like rock music and want to read subtitles as songs are sung, because it's just not happening. No closed captions either. Sweet. Only subtitles are available, and I should mention that in the menu, when selecting the subtitles, it actually says "English for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing" so yeah, it seemed like the songs would be captioned. Apparently not.

Thank you for your blog. In my book, that's false advertising. Hope that you will write the producers and ask them to fix it. Better yet, please file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov
and/or your state attorney general.

Lauren,
This may not necessarily be a lazy captionist but a company with loose guidelines that the captionist works for. The company I contract through has very specific guidelines, and I know they'd be unhappy if one of their subcontractors did this, provided the lyrics were clear enough to make out (or locate online). Sometimes there will be sections of songs as a lead-in or something, and I can't make out half the words. In that case, the guidance I'd receive is that it would be more distracting to have [inaudible] sprinkled throughout a few lines of text (or lyrics). Thanks to the Internet, though, lyrics, poems, etc., are usually able to be found. I agree that writing to the producers could get your concerns to the company that did the captioning. Cheryl
