It's April!

Man, how time flies.  It's April 9th.  April 9th?  Really?  Slow the fuck down.  Keystone is closed for the season, I had one last hurrah there with my friend from back home and it was great.  I worked the closing weekend though, bummed that I missed the closing day festivities.  The Last Grind Rail Jam looked like fun too!

As I type, it's starting to dump outside.  We might get a foot of snow.  I'm so excited but it's so dark outside.  I only have two options now- Breck or Copper.  It's too dark for fun park laps so I think I'm gonna be a lumberjack today and ride trees at Copper.  Can you believe Breck and Copper are closing this weekend?  Madness, I tell you.  Arapahoe Basin will be open until June 2nd, which works out great because I return from my Europe trip mid-May (I leave mid-April), and I can snag a few more days of snowboarding!  What great timing.

The Kingdom

You know, I was in Breckenridge yesterday running errands (it's just so much easier because everything is in one spot and I rely on the bus to get around), and I was thinking to myself why was it sometimes referred to as "The Kingdom."  I always thought it was because maybe it was beautiful and majestic looking, so I decided to look it up on my phone while on the bus headed to Breckenridge.  Turns out it was because back in the 1930s, some people discovered maps from the 1880s and Breckenridge was omitted from them.  They jokingly said that Breckenridge was never annexed into the United States and thus was free from sovereign rule so they declared it "No Man's Land" and also started calling it the Kingdom of Breckenridge.  It apparently became known as "Colorado's Kingdom" and now we celebrate that with Kingdom Days every summer.  This is why I love where I live, it's so steeped in history.  Yeah, I'm a nerd.  I thought this was a great little nugget of knowledge!
