Wolf Creek was one of the places that I really, really wanted to go to, it was on top of my list of places to go to. I finally had the opportunity to go when my good friend Joyzelle texted me saying that the three of us girls should go; us and Ali, another great friend. I was giddy because now that I didn't have my ex holding me back, I could do whatever the fuck I wanted. If I wanted to take a spontaneous day trip, I could! I always heard that Wolf Creek was super sick, the best powder, blah blah blah, all good stuff. Joyzelle said she had gone once already that season and said it was indeed fun and that adaptive lift tickets cost $30, $33ish... around there. I was game. We planned to go there and come back in the same day, which meant we would have to leave Summit County at like 4am.
I woke up at 3am, ready to rock. Ali was up too, we were texting each other while waiting for Joyzelle to come pick us up (I was in Silverthorne, Ali was in Breckenridge). The excitement that early was contagious. Ali and I were pregaming, yes, pregaming at fucking 3am, hahaha. We were texting each other like, "I'm smoking a bowl!!!! Fuck it, I'm gonna take a shot of Sailor Jerry!" I had brewed a batch of my infamous Cold Brew Coffee as well... I had my beers packed, sandwiches packed, gear ready to go. Joyzelle came and got me at like 3:45am, and we went to Breck to pick up Ali. Boy, you could FEEL the excitement among the three of us. We all smoked, drank my Cold Brew coffee, super stoked on life.
It's a four hour drive to Wolf Creek, we were hoping to get there by the time they opened at 9am. We did get there, at like 8am! We went to the ticket windows to get our tickets, and Joyzelle went and signed at the lady working the ticket windows. The lady held her hand up to tell us, "One moment." She turned, gathered three tickets, and gave them to us. I started to hand over my money, $30, for the tickets, when she raised her hand in a way that said, "Oh, no, no money." I thought for a second, "Oh shit, are these tickets free?" I turned to Ali and Joyzelle and signed to them, "Dude, I think these are free. Let's go, let's go." I turned to the lady and smiled at her and signed, "Thank you." She smiled and waved at us. FUCKING FREE TICKETS FOR WOLF CREEK!!!!!!!!!
We still had half an hour to kill before the chairs opened, so we went back to the car to eat sandwiches for breakfast and drink tallboy PBRs to celebrate us arriving there and the free tickets. Hey, you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning, am I right? I remember it was chilly that morning, but it was gearing up to be a gorgeous day. No clouds in the sky, and the sun was making its way up. A storm also had hit Wolf Creek two days prior, and even from the parking lot, I could still see lots of untouched powder. AAaaaiiiiiiieeeeeeee, I was restless and HUNGRY for that fresh snow.
We slammed our beers then went to go wait the final few minutes in line. We were in line for third chair or something like that, and we agreed on if we all got split up, we would just keep riding because there was bountiful powder to get after. It was a great plan because we all could go at our own pace. Ali had never ridden powder before, but she did great for her first day! She surfs, so I figured she would do good.
HOL-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHIT. BELIEVE THE HYPE is all I can say. All the things I had heard on the street about Wolf Creek was 100% true, no bullshit. The powder was really good, deep, and untouched in lots of places even though the last storm was two days ago. It was light and soft; I got faceshots all day and had a blast riding in the trees. A few times throughout the day, the three of us would run into each other and we would duck into the trees for safety meetings, hehe! We also took plenty of breaks back at the car to drink more beer and eat lunch, then went back and rode some more.
I seriously got fresh tracks every lap, it was GREAT! I was so fucking stoked I had the opportunity to go and took the chance! We rode until the chairs stopped spinning and started the long drive back. Of course, Ali and I continued drinking, and we stopped at some bar in South Park to grab some food. I'm gonna be honest, I thought that bar looked sketchy so I didn't order anything to eat... just a beer for me, please and thank you. We got back home in Summit late, like 10pm or so... completely beat and exhausted. I forgot how tiring riding powder all day can be. Totally. Worth. It. I bet you I will take another trip out there this winter again... I cannot wait.
Here's some photos!
