Doctor's Orders

I saw my doctor who did my surgery a couple days ago.  I drove myself to Denver and this time my foot didn't shake as much when I floored it up to the tunnels, or as I like to call them, tunnies.  My knee must be getting stronger!  I checked in when I got to the office, and my interpreter that I requested showed up.  Beautiful.

My doctor came in, took a look at my knee and remarked that it looked great, not swollen, blah, blah, blah.  Even my interpreter commented to me that she saw lots of swollen knees, hips, and that my knee did indeed look great but, "I'm not a doctor."  Ha.  Awesome.  The doc asked me if I could lift my leg and I did.  "Great!"  He then told me that I can now bend my leg up to 120 degrees for the next two weeks and I can start weaning off the crutches.  OH MAH GERD.  EXCITING SHIT.

"Doctor, when do you think I can snowboard again?" I asked, with a gleam of hope in my voice.  I had originally been told before surgery that I should be walking again in 4 weeks after surgery, snowboarding in 8 weeks.  Going by that, I was thinking I would possibly ride again early Feb.  My doctor responded, "End of Feb, beginning of March."  My heart sunk.  "I thought I could ride again 8 weeks after surgery?"  My doc answered, "The kind of tear you have takes a really long time to heal.  We want to get that knee really strong before you can snowboard."  I almost cried, but I kept my shit together.  I was just looking forward to possibly riding again early Feb, but now I might have to wait another 4 weeks.

The next day, which was yesterday, I went to my PT with my new doctor's notes about what I could now do.  I totally killed it in PT!  My therapist was constantly impressed and seemed to be stoked, so that got me stoked.  I feel like I must be doing good!  This definitely cheered me up and renewed my hope after my doctor visit the day before.  My therapist had me bend my leg as far as I could go comfortably, and I can now bend it at 99 degrees.  As soon as I am able to bend to 115 degrees, I will be able to ride the exercise bikes.  YAY!  I get to be a little more active!  Now, here's the awesome part.  I WALKED!  A little bit, just got the taste, but I CAN NOW START WALKING!  I still have to use the crutches but I'm actually using my leg now, putting weight on it, actually walking.  It's wild.  Oh man.  It feels so weird.  But so good at the same time.  I can't wait to say goodbye to those damn crutches.

8 more weeks until I can snowboard?  Who knows?
