Happy New Year!!
I think it goes without saying that 2014 isn't exactly off to a great start for me- starting it off injured. Yuck. I will get better though!
So, a few days ago, I decided that I would go to Aspen for New Years since I wasn't doing anything all week. I pushed my Thursday, Jan 2nd physical therapy appointment to Friday, Jan 3rd, so I could squeeze in an extra day in Aspen. I had a PT appointment on Monday, December 30th and I planned to go to Aspen after, then come back on Thursday, Jan 2nd.
Before I left my PT appointment, I asked my therapist if there were alternative exercises I could do to replace the ones that involved an exercise ball because I wouldn't have access to one in Aspen. As you can see, I'm determined to work hard and get better. She showed me some exercises and boom, I left. I ran home first to finish packing, and fuck around a little bit since Cobie was working and wouldn't be off til six or so. I was so freaking excited, I had butterflies in my stomach. I've known Cobie for a year and he still makes me get butterflies in my stomach.
I thought 3:30pm would be a good time to leave, I'd just do 65 the whole way and Hellcat IS slow going up Vail Pass. I still made it to Glenwood Springs really fast. Wtf. It felt like it took me an hour to get there even though I went slow! I stopped at the City Market in El Jebel to grab stuff to make for dinner and tried to fuck around. I was done by like 5:45pm, put my stuff in Hellcat, and noticed I was parked right in front of a liquor store. I went in to get champagne for New Year, but the selection sucked. It was the tiniest store ever! I settled on a six pack of beer, and the employee was so nice; he carried the beer for me, rang me up, and even carried it out to Hellcat. Ha ha ha ha. Awesome. These small things make me so happy.
I continued on to Aspen, again, driving slow. Cobie texted me saying it looks like he'll be working a little late.... shit. He told me there was a key somewhere for his apartment, but as I pulled into his parking lot, I decided fuck that, I would wait. The parking lot was pure ice, I was so scared to try to walk out there. I looked at my six-pack, silently cursed myself for never learning how to open beer with a lighter and not having a bottle opener with me. Then.... BAM! I remembered something! I had tied a bottle opener to the bed of the truck!!! I grabbed my crutches, activiated my ice claws, and slowwwwlllly, careeeefulllllyyyyyy gimped to the back of Hellcat and I used my super human strength to rip that bottle opener out. I guess I really wanted that beer.
I made it back in the truck and opened a beer. I watched someone move out in the dark of the night, I watched some fucker almost hit my truck, and I watched so many people pull up looking for parking spots only to back up and park further away. Exciting shit, I know.
I finished my beer and Cobie still wasn't back yet. It had already been an hour at this point, so I cracked open another beer. I know, I like my beer. As I got a few sips in, I saw Cobie's car appear and park behind me! Yay!!!! I opened my door and Cobie came up and embraced me. He grabbed all my shit, and my beer (hahahahaha, he laughed at my open beer), and helped me get to his place.
His roommate left for Portland for New Years, so we had the place to ourselves. It was so nice because Cobie lives in the living room, and the only bathroom is in his roommate's room. I feel super awkward going to use the bathroom while his roommate is in his room, but whatever. Living in the mountains is expensive and we have to make do with living situations.
Cobie was sick, from breathing in something at work, and he felt really hot to the touch. He actually called in sick at work on New Years Eve. I was super worried but really glad he stayed home so he could rest and recover. I kept up with my PT, we watched Raising Hope on Netflix (great show, I highly recommend it, it never fails to make us laugh out loud), we snuggled together on the couch, and just relaxed. The apartment definitely is a lot quieter without his roomate, who allows people to come and go as they please. Imagine how annoying that gets if you live and sleep in the living room and that's where they hang out!
Cobie took a super powerful nap and I let him be since he was sick and naps always help! After he woke up, we went to the grocery store and we also stopped at the grog shop for champagne for New Years... of course neither of us knew a thing about champagne. I was familiar with Cooks because that's a cheap champagne and I usually use that for mimosas. Ha! We grabbed that.... haha, buying Cooks' in Aspen.... oh man.
I found out that there would be fireworks at 8pm and also at midnight. We made it back to his apartment just in time for the 8pm fireworks. We sat outside on his deck, he opened the champagne and poured it out in mason jar glasses. Oh, Aspen. So classy. We toasted, kissed, and watched the fireworks as we sipped... that only lasted 5 minutes because it was cold out, hahaha. Aspen!!!!!!!!!!
I cooked dinner, and we turned on Raising Hope. I wanted to watch the ball drop in New York, but he has no TV, d'oh! Just Netflix. We stayed up til midnight, "Happy New Year!!" and did the mandatory midnight kiss. We promptly went to bed afterwards haha. Total party animals right here.
I spent New Year Day chilling, it was still icy out and it's not easy for me to just up and go out with my stupid crutches and my dumb knee. Cobie went to work for a little bit, and our friends who live upstairs, one came downstairs and invited me to come hang out with everyone. That was cool, I can't remember the last time that someone told me to come hang out. I was happy and went upstairs, with Dane close by to make sure I didn't fall and die on the stairs. Andy gave up his chair for me and I plopped down and just hung out with everyone until Cobie texted me and asked me if I could take his car and go pick him up in town since we have to go to City Market anyways.
I got in his car... he drives a Subaru Impreza, and holy moly, it's so easy to get in with my condition and what have you. Wow. I also always forget how tall Cobie is until I get in a car that he's driven.... haha... my feet did not reach the pedals at all. I had never driven his car on ice and I knew he had all-seasonal tires (I'm used to thrashing about with snow tires), so I was super careful but at the same time, I was really impressed with his car, the way it handled the ice. Damn, it's a nice car. I still like my old truck, hehehe. I scooped him up and he said he felt awful again... working outside will do that to you. I grabbed the ingredients to make my homemade chicken noodle soup, which he loves, and man.... it was good. It really hit the spot.
We woke up on January 2nd, the day that I planned on going back to Summit. It was finally sunny outside... of course, it's sunny when I leave Aspen. I packed my stuff up, spent precious last moments with Cobie, and checked cotrip.org to make sure i70 was good to drive on. It said i70 was closed! Closed!! WTF? It's sunny and clear out! I clicked "more info"... i70 was closed on Vail Pass for avalanche control. Ahhhhhhhh. Okay. I had once been stopped on i70 so they could do avalanche control and it only took like 10 minutes. I checked that website again a few mins later and i70 was indeed open again. I dropped Cobie off at Buttermilk so he could snowboard with his friend who is going back to Tahoe and I started my journey home. I was really sad to leave Cobie, I truly enjoyed my time with him. Love that guy, seriously. I don't know how I landed such a great guy.
